Position Summary

I-2-I Solutions is seeking a reliable Water Sampling Technician to support a Legionella water monitoring program at the Veterans Home of California in Chula Vista.

This position is primarily responsible for collecting water samples from potable water systems, facility locations, and cooling towers; properly labeling and documenting samples; completing chain-of-custody records; and preparing samples for laboratory transport.

This is an on-call/project-based position. Routine Legionella sampling is anticipated twice per year, with additional sampling required when requested by the facility. Routine services are generally performed Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collect Legionella and other bacteriological water samples using appropriate sampling procedures.
  • Collect samples from multiple locations throughout the Veterans Home campus, including potable water systems and cooling towers.
  • Prepare, label, preserve, and package samples according to established procedures.
  • Complete chain-of-custody documentation accurately and completely.
  • Record sample identification, location, matrix, collection date and time, preservatives, and other required information.
  • Measure and/or document chlorine residuals when required.
  • Maintain proper custody and control of samples from collection through transfer or shipment.
  • Coordinate sample delivery or shipment to the designated laboratory.
  • Follow laboratory sampling instructions, holding-time requirements, and sample-handling procedures.
  • Maintain accurate field notes and sampling records.
  • Coordinate work with I-2-I Solutions project management and designated Veterans Home personnel.
  • Perform work with minimal disruption to facility operations.
  • Follow applicable health, safety, OSHA, and facility requirements.
  • Be available for emergency or follow-up sampling when required.

The solicitation specifically requires detailed sample labels and chain-of-custody records, including the sampler's information, collection date/time, container information, preservation, analysis requested, sample relinquishment information, and chlorine residuals.

Schedule and Availability

Routine sampling is currently anticipated in June and December, with approximately 11 scheduled samples during each sampling event. Sampling locations may change depending on the facility's Legionella Control Program.

The technician must also have reasonable on-call availability for emergency sampling. The contract requires response to an emergency testing request within four hours of notification, with emergency testing generally completed the same working day.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous experience collecting drinking water, environmental water, microbiological, Legionella, or similar samples.
  • Familiarity with proper water-sampling techniques and contamination-prevention practices.
  • Experience completing chain-of-custody forms and maintaining sample traceability.
  • Ability to follow written sampling protocols precisely.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Ability to work independently in an active healthcare/residential facility.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the Chula Vista project site.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to safely transport sampling supplies and packaged samples.
  • Ability to communicate promptly with project management regarding sampling activities, issues, or site conditions.
  • Ability to comply with applicable safety and facility requirements.

The contract requires services to be performed by qualified service technicians working for or under the direction of the contractor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Legionella sampling.
  • Experience sampling potable hot and cold water systems.
  • Experience collecting samples from cooling towers.
  • Experience using chlorine residual test equipment.
  • Environmental technician, water-quality technician, laboratory courier/sampler, industrial hygiene, or similar field experience.
  • Familiarity with microbiological sample preservation, shipping, and holding-time requirements.
  • Previous experience working in hospitals, Veterans Affairs facilities, skilled nursing facilities, or other healthcare environments.

Compensation

Competitive hourly or per-event compensation based on experience. Travel and project-related requirements will be discussed with selected candidates.

This position is being recruited in support of a pending government contract opportunity. Employment and assignment to the project are contingent upon contract award, final project requirements, and authorization to begin performance.
