About the role
We are seeking a part-time Laboratory Assistant to support daily laboratory operations, from sample receipt through analysis and reporting. This entry-level position suits graduating students and early-career scientists who want hands-on experience in an ISO 17025 accredited microbiology lab. The role reports to the Lab Supervisor, and training on our methods is provided.
What you will do
- Receive water samples, verify chain of custody forms, labels, and temperatures, and log samples
- Process samples for Legionella and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) testing under supervision
- Read and record plate results at required time points
- Perform water chemistry tests such as pH, conductivity, and hardness
- Prepare culture media and reagents
- Maintain quality control records, including equipment checks and temperature logs
- Enter results accurately and verify data before reports are released
- Assemble and ship sampling kits (bottles, coolers, forms) to field teams
- Keep the lab, biosafety cabinet, and glassware clean and organized
- Assist with supply inventory and tracking
- Follow all laboratory safety and PPE procedures
What you need
- Completed or completing a bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field. A comparable associate's degree with 1+ years of experience is also acceptable.
- Hands-on lab coursework (pipetting, aseptic technique, or plating)
- Strong attention to detail and careful record keeping
- Comfortable with Excel and data entry
- Able to stand for long periods and lift up to 40 lbs
- Able to work in a BSL-2 laboratory and handle biohazardous materials following safety protocols
- Ability to work well in a team setting and fast-paced environment
- Authorized to work in the United States
Nice to have
- Microbiology culture experience, such as membrane filtration or spread plate methods
- Experience in an accredited or regulated lab (ISO 17025 or similar)
- A previous lab job, internship, or undergraduate research
- Schedule flexibility
Compensation and schedule
- $18 per hour during a 3-month training period, with an increase following a competency review
- Part-time, estimated 25 hours per week
