The position supports the water systems serving the hospitals' Sterile Processing Services (SPS), including critical water, utility water, and steam systems.
The work involves recurring monthly and quarterly sampling, as well as additional sampling when water quality results fall outside established limits.
Primary Responsibilities
Water Sampling and Field Testing
Perform scheduled water sampling at three VA Medical Centers in accordance with the approved sampling plan and project requirements.
Collect samples from all designated sampling points, including individual fixtures within the Sterile Processing Service areas.
Sample reverse osmosis (RO) water systems, including points of generation, return loops, and designated critical-water sinks.
Collect samples from washer-disinfectors, Medivator units, and associated decontamination sinks.
Collect utility-water samples from designated generation points, sinks, ultrasonic equipment, and other specified fixtures.
Collect samples from designated steam system testing points.
Perform applicable on-site chemistry measurements, including pH, conductivity, total alkalinity, and total hardness, using calibrated instruments and approved procedures.
Collect samples for laboratory analysis of Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC) and bacterial endotoxin.
Follow applicable ANSI/AAMI ST108:2023 sampling procedures and the specific testing requirements for critical water, utility water, and steam.

Maintain accurate records of sampling locations, collection dates and times, field readings, and other required sampling information.
Sample Handling and Laboratory Coordination
Properly label, package, preserve, and prepare collected water samples for laboratory analysis.
Maintain sample traceability and chain-of-custody documentation.
Follow applicable sample temperature, preservation, transportation, and holding-time requirements.
Coordinate timely delivery or shipment of collected samples to the designated laboratory.
Ensure time-sensitive samples, particularly microbiological samples, are handled and delivered in accordance with applicable testing requirements.
Coordinate with the laboratory and project management team regarding sample submissions and any collection issues.
Sampling Schedule and Retesting
Perform quarterly sampling at designated utility-water and steam testing points.
Be available for unscheduled resampling following out-of-range water quality results.
Complete required resampling within two business days, during normal business hours.
Report unusual field readings, sampling difficulties, or potential water quality concerns promptly to the project management team.
Documentation and Quality Control
Maintain complete and accurate field sampling logs and testing documentation.
Record field measurements, including applicable equipment calibration and quality control information.
Submit sampling records, chain-of-custody forms, and related documentation in a timely manner.
Enter or upload sampling records and field results into the designated project records system as required.
Follow project-specific quality control procedures, sampling instructions, and VA facility requirements.
Coordinate with VA representatives and the I-2-I Solutions project team to support timely completion of assigned sampling activities.
Follow applicable hospital safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Required Qualifications
More than five years of professional water sampling experience.
Demonstrated experience collecting water samples for chemical and microbiological analysis.
Knowledge of proper sampling techniques, preservation, handling, and transportation requirements.
Experience using and calibrating portable water quality testing instruments.
Ability to follow written sampling protocols and maintain accurate field documentation.
