Water Sampling Technician
Position Summary
I-2-I Solutions is seeking an experienced Water Sampling Technician to support an anticipated water-quality and water-treatment contract at Fleet Readiness Center East in Cherry Point, North Carolina.
The technician will be responsible primarily for collecting water samples, performing required field measurements, maintaining accurate field documentation and chain-of-custody records, and preparing samples for laboratory analysis.
The work involves approximately 55 hydronic water systems, four downdraft water filtration dust collectors, and a rainwater collection system located throughout the FRC East facility. Systems include open-loop cooling towers, chilled-water closed loops, hot-water closed loops, and glycol-containing closed loops.
This position is focused on sampling, monitoring, and field testing. Laboratory analyses will be performed separately by I-2-I Solutions and/or an approved laboratory as assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
- Visit designated systems throughout FRC East and collect representative water samples in accordance with project procedures.
- Perform recurring monthly sampling of open-loop cooling towers, chilled-water closed loops, hot-water closed loops, glycol systems, downdraft water filtration dust collectors, makeup water, and the rainwater collection system.
- Perform applicable field water-quality measurements using calibrated portable instrumentation and field test kits.
- Field measurements may include pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, hardness, chlorides, alkalinity, treatment/inhibitor residuals, nitrite, percent glycol, free and total chlorine, ATP, silica, iron, and other parameters required by the project.
- Record heat-transfer and other system observations when required by the approved sampling and monitoring procedure.
- Perform ATP measurements for bacteriological monitoring when required and immediately report unusually high readings through the established project communication procedure.
- Collect samples required for laboratory analysis and ensure proper labeling, preservation, handling, packaging, and shipment.
- Complete chain-of-custody documentation and maintain complete traceability from sample collection through laboratory receipt.
- Read and document accessible flowmeter or makeup-water information where required.
- Assist with corrosion-coupon tracking, collection, replacement, and shipment for laboratory analysis when assigned.
- Inspect sampling locations for unusual conditions such as leaks, abnormal water levels, visible biological growth, sediment, scale, or other observable system conditions and document findings.
- Accurately identify each sample by building, hydronic system code, sample location, date, time, and other required information.
- Complete field portions of Water Analysis and Service Reports and provide field records promptly after each service visit.
- Check in and check out at the designated Government location for every site visit and coordinate access with Government personnel.
- Maintain, calibrate, clean, and verify field sampling instruments and equipment before and after use.
- Follow all I-2-I Solutions, OSHA, FRC East, and site-specific health and safety requirements.
- Wear required PPE, including safety shoes and any required eye, hearing, hand, or other protection while working within the facility.
- Maintain clean work areas and properly manage sampling materials and generated waste.
The SOW specifically requires monthly testing and reporting for the different system types. Open-loop testing includes parameters such as chlorides, hardness, conductivity, TDS, pH, inhibitor residual and ATP; glycol systems require percent-glycol and pH monitoring; DWDC units require pH and ATP monitoring; and the rainwater system requires monthly free chlorine, total chlorine, and pH measurements.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have hands-on experience collecting environmental, industrial, cooling-water, process-water, or similar water samples and be comfortable working independently in mechanical and industrial areas.
Experience using portable water-quality instruments and field test kits for measurements such as pH, conductivity, TDS, chlorine, hardness, glycol, ATP, or similar parameters is strongly desired.
The individual must be able to maintain accurate sampling records and chain-of-custody documentation; follow written sampling procedures; properly handle, preserve, package, and prepare samples for shipment; safely work around cooling towers and mechanical water systems; communicate unusual field conditions promptly; and obtain and maintain access to a Department of Defense installation.
A valid driver's license and reliable transportation to the Cherry Point, NC area are required.
Highly Preferred Experience
Experience with industrial water treatment systems, cooling towers, chilled-water loops, hot-water loops, glycol systems, HVAC water systems, or chemical water-treatment programs is highly preferred.
The Government's SOW states that contractor field technicians performing the water-treatment work must have at least five years of experience chemically treating systems of similar size and configuration. Because of that requirement, candidates with five or more years of industrial water-treatment experience will receive strong consideration.
Experience with ATP testing, cooling-tower water analysis, corrosion monitoring, chemical treatment residual testing, Hach or equivalent field test equipment, refractometers for glycol measurement, and electronic field reporting is also desirable.
Work Environment
The work will be performed at Fleet Readiness Center East, a Department of Defense facility at Cherry Point, North Carolina. The technician will travel between multiple buildings and mechanical-system locations within the installation.
Government work hours are generally 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays. Personnel must comply with FRC East access requirements and all applicable Federal, State, OSHA, and facility-specific safety requirements. Safety shoes and task-appropriate PPE are required.
